Facebook is the recent most social media that everyone loves. We utilize this free networking page to keep in touch with friends all over the world. We share pictures, likes, favorite movies, books, and TV shows with friends on Facebook. Does Facebook have any negatives? One negative may be that the employers have started to use Facebook for background check. According to Forbes magazine, July 18 2011 edition, almost all employers search Facebook profiles and Google footprints of selected candidates before making a hiring decision. Background check has been a common step in the hiring process for a long time and this is to find out if the candidates have any criminal records or history of drug /alcohol abuse. Facebook is a new and inexpensive way of checking people’s background. Employers analyze the information available on the candidates’ Facebook pages to select the best person for the job.
It is true that only our Facebook friends can read what we post on the wall but in most cases, anyone can access our Facebook Profile, Pictures, Likes, and Groups. Forbes gives an example of the Facebook group “I shouldn’t have to press 1 for English. We are in the United States. Learn the language.”, that is viewed as racist by employers. Also, if you have any pictures of guns or knives on the Facebook page, you are most likely to be taken as a violent person. Employers are able to figure out the race, gender or religion of the candidates from the Facebook pages before selecting them for interviews. None of this information was available to the hiring managers in the past.
So, be careful what you have on your Facebook page specially, if you are currently in the job market.
