New Zirconium video

Discussion created by Andres Tretiakov on Mar 16, 2012

New video on Periodic Videos referrering to a sample donation I've made last year during my research dissertation about  pyrotechnics (both interesting and exciting).

Recently, I've also acquired some old disposable flash bulbs called magicubex. These contained zirconium wool inside a sealed glass bulb filled with air/oxygen). An electrical supply of 12 V will set them off producing a very bright white light (the flash) consuming all of the metal wool and leaving a grayish-white powder behind (zirconium oxide), others were set off mechanically using a spring mechanism which ignited a small pyrotechnic charge on the base stem which burned the wool inside the glass bulb.
