We had to do a gen chem lab determining the freezing point depression constant of glacial acetic acid using two solutes: aspirin and table sugar (sucrose). We couldn't get the sucrose to dissolve in the acetic acid so we couldn't get an accurate change in freezing points between the solvent and the acid/sucrose solution. Why wouldn't the sugar dissolve? We tried putting the test tube in a hot water bath and nothing. We tried adding more acetic acid and the sugar still wouldn't dissolve. It's my understanding that these are both polar compounds and like dissolves like, right? If anyone has insight to this it would be super helpful.
