For newly minted Ph.D.s, the excitement of landing a faculty position can quickly give way to anxiety as they embark on setting up a lab for the first time and forming a research group. At the other end of a professor’s career, shrinking a group and shutting down a lab can be equally daunting, and an experience often marked by mixed emotion.
