In Organic Synthesis(Volume 4 page 9-1925) the authors react hexanoic acid with bromine and catalytic amount of PBr3.The reaction commences at about 50C and the bromine reacts in about 4 -6 hours. The valuable byproduct HBr is absorbed in water with gas hose attached to condenser top. Towards the end the temperature is increased to 100C. Then the product is vacuum disilled.THE REACTION SHOULD BE COOLED AND QUENCHED WITH WATER! IF THE WATER IS NOT ADDED YOU WILL HAVE BR ATTACHED TO CARBON #1 AND NOT DESIRED --OH GROUP! This omission is repeated in Arthur Vogel's PRACTICAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY!
