Committee Network Toolkit

Why ACS Network
The ACS Network is the social tool of the American Chemical Society.  As a chemist, this resource allows you to connect with other chemists throughout your career. The content is owned by the ACS and its functionality is being developed with the chemical community in mind.  It has tools which allow you to develop a profile and to collect friends.  It uses the ACS ID, the same credentials you use to renew your dues or to access C&EN or other publications .

Committee Conversations and Collaboration
The ACS Network has some strong functionality that supports the work and duties of committees.  A secret group can be formed to house discussions or to share documents that only committee members can access.  In this secret group, agenda books, meeting minutes, or other documents can be developed, commented on, and edited using the document and file upload tools. The secret group becomes the permanent place to keep documents as committee membership changes.

Grants and Awards Selection Process
The ACS Network provides a secure, private place for committees to evaluate applications for grants, awards, scholarships, or any other competition.  Some committees use the star-ratings or the like function to rate a set of applications (i.e. documents). Others use a spreadsheet or other document to collect review information.

Prioritization of Ideas
The Network has a special module to help prioritize a set of ideas. Ideas are entered individually, discussed and then voted upon.  Points are associated with voting, and the more popular ideas receive higher scores.  Polls are used if a single idea/item needs to be determined idea/answer.

Communication
The ACS Network can be used as a communication tool or can be used in conjunction with other communications tools (email, texting, Twitter, etc.).  Committee members can remind each other about meetings, events, etc. by creating an ACS Network event which then appears on the committee’s group calendar.  Discussions, announcements, and status updates can also be used as reminders. Users can choose to follow or track a group, a person, or a piece of content so that new content appears on their activity stream.  Users can set up their preferences to control the emails they receive around followed and tracked content.
