Hi all,
The CAP meeting approaches! I hope you're as excited as I am. I always look forward to bringing this vibrant group together for frank discussion. We will have a new attendee (and possible new member) Ms. Pam Snelson, College Librarian at Franklin & Marshall College, joining us as well.
CAP MEMBERS, please create a 5 minute update on your campus using the attached FLASHTEMPLATE slides. These slides are on a timer. Slide one is up for 20 seconds and each subsequent slide has 1 minute allotted before it moves to the next slide. The topic for each slide is at the noted on each. If you have anything urgent you need to add please create ONE last slide (slide #6) to share.
The purpose of these is to keep these presentations tight and succinct so we can still as closely as possible to our agenda. Thank you for staying within these parameters!
For those of you giving regular un-timed presentations, please see the attached CAPTEMPLATE slides and stick to the time allotment that we discussed via email.
Lastly the agenda is below and attached. Please review and determine what talking points/questions you would like to mention/ask when we get to that section.
We particularly call your attention to two sessions on Friday:
"Evolution in Business Models/Shift in Acquisitions Decisions" and
"Customer Pain Points with ACS aka “We like your products/we don’t like you”
Please come prepared to discuss these topics as they related to your institution.

12:00-12:40 | Discussion re: Discovery Tools |
Given the noticeable uptick in customer inquiries about discovery tools both at library meetings and one-on-one, the question of ACS relationship with the major discovery vendors remains pressing. The purpose of this session is discuss the change in the landscape since our last meeting and whether ACS should consider changing its position on allowing these tools access to our content.
Susan Pastore will provide a brief overview of the Discovery Tools landscape and then Carol Hoover and Andrew White will share their respective experiences with PRIMO and vuFIND.
1:40-3:30 | Innovation Game Overview with Marketing |
Marketing will provide an overview and demonstration of the “Product Tree” innovation game they will be doing at the Special Libraries Association Meeting in Chicago. The purpose of this demo is to gauge if librarians find this a stimulating exercise in exploring the future of the library and if it can serve as a potential “workshop” item to bring to other library meetings. This is tied to the ACS Publications Library Relations goal of getting ACS Pubs in front of librarians at library meetings.
9:30-11:00 | Evolution in Business Models/Shift in Acquisitions Decisions |
This section will open with a one-slide summary of the changing evaluation standards that librarians and the publishing community are discussing for serials. In light of the recent Finch Report, it appears that libraries and funding agencies are taking a hard look at shifting funds toward open access models instead of subscriptions and they’re finding pain points. Are libraries actually acting to “break the big deals” and shift monies over to funding author-pays open access? More than just “considering,” are libraries actually BUDGETING for purchasing models of the future?
