Isotopes

How is the average mass of an isotope like copper-63 different from 63?  I understand why average atomic mass of an element is a decimal, as it is the average of all the different isotopes, but can't quite figure out how an isotope with a whole mass number shows a non-integer average.  What are we averaging?

Thanks!
