Sodium Hydroxide and Hair Relaxers

I have been trying to find a mild sodium hydroxide hair relaxer and I feel like the ones in the stores are too strong. I just want to loosen my hair curl a little bit, and not eat away at my hair too much. Is there a way to slow down the process of a store brought sodium hydroxide relaxer, or can I make my own low sodium hydroxide relaxer? I know you have to protect your eyes and nose when dealing with sodium hydroxide. Also, it seems drying to the hair, is there anything I can do about that?

Thank you,
