What is the reaction?

Dbu and bromotrichloromethane, both aqueous, mixed together at room temperature. First changed from clear liquid to red, then darker. Then emitted a dark grey and black smoke, then turned into a black putty-like substance that spattered in the vial. Surface tension within the substance seemed very high and within a matter of moments, the spatter settled at the bottom of the vial. It seemed very exothermic as the vial was very hot. What could have happened here?
