I've been told that I can never mix a lye solution in a glass container because it will etch the glass and it will eventually break. I cannot find any evidence that a basic lye solution will etch glass. All etchings I've ever done or seen were with acids. I also cannot find proof that the lye will react with glass at the highest lye solution temp 200F. I've seen pure lye and a bunsen burner dissolve glass. Will just putting lye in glass or a lye solution on glass harm the glass?
