2019 Chair: Peter Peterson        peterp901@juno.com

 Water Chemist, Milwaukee Water Works

While I was seeking work in the chemistry field, I ended up working in various quality control-related manufacturing environments for many years.  While I was working for an analytical service laboratory, which did metallurgical and environmental testing, I discovered my passion for water and wastewater treatment. As I made a career change later in life, I returned to school and earned an additional degree in Environmental and Pollution Control (Water Quality). Currently, I am Wisconsin DNR certified in two different areas: wastewater and municipal water supply. I have over 10 years of combined experience in these areas, and have worked in various industrial treatment and municipal treatment plants.  Since 2005, I have been very active with numerous water and wastewater professional organizations, and been keeping current with the state-of-art on the technology and with government environmental standards. In 2002 I started the scientific instrumentation donation program from ground up and developed a system whereby industries and larger universities who wish to donate their equipment could provide them to smaller colleges and high schools. The local section of which I am a part hopes that the availability of donated instruments would encourage schools to expand or initiate active science programs. My efforts have made their way into the national quarterly newsletter, bringing me a sense of personal satisfaction and our institution the items it needs to help students succeed.

Volunteers Coordinator: Irma Quezada   quezadig@alverno.edu

Chemistry major, Alverno College

I am a first-generation chemistry student and I had to overcome several obstacles to become a chemist. I have been discouraged by traditional Hispanic parents who do not believe women should pursue a career, especially not in the science field. I constantly worked double shifts to afford school tuition. And yet, nothing stopped me from achieving my goals. I have extensive experience in laboratory work as I work as a lab assistant and student assistant in the Alverno Girl’s Math & Science Academy. I also completed a summer internship with Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). I became a mentor and tutor for younger students for my recognized work ethic. Additionally, I am volunteering to promote chemistry at the events such as the celebration of National Chemistry Week and Girl’s & STEM Day at Discovery World sponsored by ACS. I agreed to be a Volunteers coordinator because I believe ACS brings the great benefits to our community. Being aware of who is willing to volunteer at the events, makes it easier to achieve ACS-Milwaukee section goal of promoting “the value of chemistry in everyday life.” The community, especially children, get to see the fun and interesting side of chemistry that could change their life.  I will be graduating this coming May and will soon start seeking a job as a chemist. Besides chemistry, I am interested in books and family time.

National Chemistry Week: Heather Mernitz, Ph.D   heather.mernitz@alverno.edu

Associate Professor of Physical Science, Alverno College

I hold an M.S. in Human Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism from Tufts University (Boston, MA). I am convinced that an understanding of chemistry is necessary for being an educated voter, consumer, and citizen in the world today and I work hard to make science accessible and comprehensible for all my students at whatever level they need for their lives and careers.  I enjoy being involved in ACS National Chemistry Week outreach because it allows myself and my students an opportunity to share our passion for chemistry with our community and with future generations of chemists, voters, consumers, and citizens.

Earth Day Celebration: Joe Piatt, Ph.D., M.S.C.E.   jpiatt@carrollu.edu

Associate Professor of Chemistry and Environmental Science at Carroll University

I have been at Carroll College since 1998, where I teach analytical chemistry, instrumentation and environmental science. I have received my bachelor of science degrees from Marquette University in 1989, majoring in mathematics and chemistry; I have also received an M.S.C.E. in environmental engineering sciences from the University of Minnesota in 1993 and my PhD degree in soil, water and environmental science from the University of Arizona in 1997, where I also completed a post-doctoral appointment.
