Text Formatting

  • Text should be left justified. Centered and full-justified are more difficult to read.
  • Use black for your font color. Red, green or other font colors are more difficult to read.
  • Separate paragraphs with headers to help users quickly identify the content units on a page.
  • Use bullets so users can easily scan the content.
  • Use sentence case (i.e. do not capitalize text, except for acronyms). It is more difficult and time consuming to read words in all caps than it is to read in proper case.
  • Use bold to emphasize content. Don’t underline or italicize text for emphasis. Underlined content on the web means it is linked. Italicized content is more difficult to read online.
