Chemists Needed to Talk with Students at the Undergraduate Speed Networking Event

Help undergraduates learn about career options in chemistry by volunteering for 30 minutes or more  at the Undergraduate Speed Networking with Chemistry Professionals event in Philadelphia. It will be held Monday, August 20, from 9:45-11:15 a.m. at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel Liberty Ballroom F.

If you accept our invitation to participate, your role would be simply talk informally with individual students about your career and to ask the students about their aspirations.

It’s easier to see what we’re trying to accomplish with this event if think back to when you were an undergraduate student. You probably knew that you loved studying chemistry, but you weren’t at all sure about what you could do with a chemistry degree once you graduated. How amazing would it have been to actually talk to “real,” practicing chemists about their careers and hear first-hand out about the opportunities that are available in the chemical field?

We’re working hard to find a wide spectrum of chemists who have careers in traditional and non-traditional areas of chemistry. We’re seeking chemists from all sectors job, including academia, industry, government, or non-profits, industry, government, and non-profits. Full time and part-time chemists, temporary workers, entrepreneurs, self-employed chemists, and retired chemists are all welcome to participate. The greater the diversity we have among the volunteers, the better the experience will be for the students.

We will have 30 cocktail rounds and are hoping to have a chemist at each available to speak to students.  Every eight minutes, students will rotate to a new table.

Please contact me at l_betsock@acs.org if you are interested in participating in this event and also please let me know the time(s) you are available. We are looking for volunteers to stay and talk with students for 30 minutes or more during the event. The event is divided into three shifts: 9:45-10:15 .am., 10:15-10:45 a.m., and 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

We hope to have an opportunity to work with you on the “Undergraduate Speed Networking with Chemistry Professionals." event.
