Research and Special Interests: I have two primary areas of research interest. The first area of interest is in the synthesis of halogenated organic compounds and their impact in the environment and human health. Specifically, my research focuses on the physicochemical interaction of halogenated compounds with hydrocarbon compounds such as biological lipids and proteins. An understanding of these factors is important to the understanding of the biological effects of a large number of halogenated, persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The second area of interest is in the development of novel drug delivery systems for the treatment and prevention of lung diseases such as lung cancer. Current effort focus on the synthesis of partially fluorinated prodrugs of potential chemopreventive agents for the pulmonary administration of drugs using fluorocarbon vehicles, the investigation of their transport through the lung epithelium using cells in culture, and the distribution of these compounds after pulmonary administration in vivo.
