My class is experimenting with Monoammonium Phosphate (NH4H2PO4)and Aluminum Potassium Sulfate (AlK(SO4)2*12H2O) to grow crystals. I found a website where adding Alum to a solution of MAP achieved different crystal habits. However, I would like to understand the chemistry behind mixing these two salts. I would like to verify that:
1. Mixing the two salts in water form Ammonium Alum (NH4Al(SO4)2) and Potassium phosphate (KH2(PO4));
2. None of these compounds together are harmful; and
3. If #2 is true, then I should be able to dispose the solution down the sink.
Thank you for your help-
