Can salt (sodium chloride) form hair like crystals. I have been working with an apparatus made of 2 metals and organic material (leaves off a tree) immersed in a highly salted solution. After removing the apparatus and draining, the vessel grew very fine hair like crystals from the residue on the interior walls. The crystals grew until they broke off and formed a pile that looks like insulation or cotton candy. The hair like crystals are stable but brittle.
What do I have?
