How will your Local Section participate in Earth Day in 2013?

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED). The CCED 2013 theme, "Our Earth: Handle with Care!", focuses on the general topics of water, air, plants/soil, and recycling.

Re: How will your Local Section participate in Earth Day in 2013?

For the Central New Mexico Local Section we are planning to continue our outreach through a public community event sponsored by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (www.pajaritoeec.org) in Los Alamos, NM. A main feature of our booth at that event is to inform the public about the variety of biopolymers that are being used in several consumer items.  Examples of items we will be showing are made from NatureWorks Ingeo (www.natureworksllc.com), Metabolix Mirel PHA (used in Papermate Earth Write pens and pencils), and DuPont Sorona (www2.dupont.com/Sorona_Consumer/en_US/index.html).

Also our Local Section is likely to assist the Student Member Chapter at New Mexico Tech University (Socorro, NM) in holding an on-campus event for Earth Day.

At past such events we have handed out some of the CCED items, e.g. coasters made from recycled soda bottles, available through the ACS Online Store.  I’m concerned that a number of the other CCED items don’t clearly seem to support the 12 principles of Green Chemistry (http://portal.acs.org/portal/PublicWebSite/greenchemistry/about/principles/WPCP_007504).  For some of these items when we have used them before we have gotten questions from members of the public regarding them, e.g. what is it made of, is it made from recycled material.

San Diego Section will join the Earthfair celebration in Balboa Park Sunday April 21st.  Volunteers will set up a table in the special Childrens Activity area, our 6th year at this event.  The organizers have placed us on the main street, where the Childrens Earth Parade passes, when learning of our educational hands on demos.  Parents take the CCED brochure to continue educating their children with the articles and activites.

All of the activities are intended to educate, entertain and inspire youth, in the spirit of Earth Day. This year, participants will learn to make paper, find out about recycling, make gift cards from recycled materials, and learn how to visit wild areas without disturbing the environment. The Children's Earth Parade marches through the Park to the Children's Area. Participants are invited to dress up as endangered species, present their favorite earth-friendly messages. Children’s Stage features youth-oriented performances throughout the day. This is the 24th year of this free event. Each year, the EarthFair draws around 60,000 visitors.
