Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need to be a member to join the ACS Network?

No, the ACS Network is open to the chemical community in general. The only requirement is that you create an ACS ID, i.e. an account with us with which you will log in to the Network.

I am logged into www.acs.org, but when I go to the Network, it say Welcome Guest. What should I do?

The first thing to do is to click on the "log in" button found in the top right of the page. This will bring you to a new window prompting you to log in with your ACS ID Username and Password. If this is successful, you should return to the home page of the Network and your name should appear in the upper right hand of the page.

If you are certain that you are logged in on www.acs.org and the Network is not recognizing your account, the ACS Network and the ACS member database may have gotten out of synchronization. The best way to handle this situation is to go to www.acs.org and edit your ACS record via MyAccount. Change your email address or your address or your postal address or your opt-in status.  Save the record, then go back in and change it so that it contains the correct information and has you opted into the ACS Network. This should force the correct information to be sent to the Network and it should recognize you when you go the ACS Network. (See Login Issue - What to do if the ACS Network doesn't recognize you for explicit screenshots on this process.)

For other help with your ACS ID (login credentials), go to the help page on www.acs.org.

How do I change my password (or my email address)?
Your password and email address for the ACS Network are part of a single record of information at the ACS that is used to manage all your interactions with the Society. The easiest way to change your password or email address is to go to www.acs.org and edit your account there through the My Account link which appears when you click on your name in the upper right.

Where do I find my groups?
The trick to this is to realize that a group is a container that holds content and so it is a PLACE. You can find a link to Your Places (2) in your personal user menu which appears when you click on your profile picture in the upper right hand of the page.

You may also access it through "Browse" in the main navigation.  You can filter to the groups you own or that you belong to in the left hand side bar.

Where do I find my draft blog post or any draft content?

Referring back to the picture displayed above, you can also find the Your Content (3) link in your personal user menu. Alternatively, you can go to the main navigation and select Browse, then the type of content you are seeking. If you are logged in, "Drafts" should appear in the left hand navigation.

I was invited to an ACS Group, but when I go to that group it says that I am not authorized.  How do I access this group?

The Network is checking the email address that is associated with your profile to the one to which the invitation was sent. If these are different, i.e. if you have multiple email addresses, you may have received an invitation at one address but your ACS Network profile is using another one and the system does not recognize you. Either change your email address or have the user who invited you to send you and invitation to the email address associated with your Network profile. You can check the email associated with your account by navigating to your profile page.

I want to reply to a discussion or vote in a poll but don't see any options to do so.

Make sure that you are logged in -- your name should appear in the upper left hand of the page.  If it says "Welcome, Guest" then you need to log in. Users must be logged in to add, change, edit content and access any groups which are not open.

How do I change the country or state in my profile?

The data for the city and state are kept in a separate database which connects to other ACS systems. You can update this by going to www.acs.org and editing your ACS record via MyAccount.

How do I edit my Network Account and Privacy?

There is a link to Edit Profile in your drop down personal user menu, which appears when you click on your profile picture in the upper right hand of the page. Referring to the picture below, clicking on the link (2) takes you to a new window that allows you to edit certain profile information, as well as your privacy settings and profile picture. Other profile information, such as your email or password, can only be changed by following the MyAccount link found on www.acs.org.
