LOCAL STUDENTS WIN CHANCE TO QUALIFY FOR INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD

The Inland Northwest Section of the American Chemical Society has announced the names of nine outstanding high school chemistry students. The students will take a national exam that may qualify them to become members of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad team that will compete in the 45th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Moscow, Russia, July 15-24, 2013.

The students are:

Joseph Bell, North Central High School, Spokane Jesse Chamberlin, Curlew High School, Curlew Talia Donihue, Curlew High School, Curlew Jacob Frederick, Lewis and Clark High School, Spokane Elyssa Hanson, Joel E. Ferris High School, Spokane John Michels, Gonzaga Preparatory School, Spokane Julio Marco Pineda, Lewis and Clark High School, Spokane Ethan Reid, Joel E. Ferris High School, Spokane Benjamin Wright, Gonzaga Preparatory School, Spokane

The IChO involves a series of theoretical exams, laboratory exercises, and other activities aimed at identifying the best chemistry students from participating nations around the world. The U.S. has participated in this event since 1984. In 2012, the U.S. team won one gold and three silver medals. A total of 283 students represented 72 countries at the 44th IChO, in Washington, D.C.

The nine local nominees are among over 1,200 nationwide that will take a national qualifying exam April 11-15, 2013 to select finalists. Twenty students will be identified and will undergo intensive training June 4-19 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. The top four will be chosen to represent the U.S. in the 45th IChO competition.
