Thank you to Mr. James Lake for presenting "Patent Reform, A First Step - The America Invents Act". Mr. Lake is a member of our section and is a registered patent attorney specializing in client counseling and procurement of intellectual property rights in the U.S. and abroad. The America Invents Act (AIA) was signed into law on September 16, 2011. It is beginning to take effect and implementing regulations are proposed. The law represents the most significant change to the U.S. patent system since 1952. Among other things, the Act switches the U.S. from a "first to invent" to a "first inventor to file" system, eliminates interference proceedings, and develops post-grant opposition. Topics to be addressed include: What practical effect does this have on inventors? What needed areas of patent reform were left out?

The entry-level is Secretary-Treasurer. The second year, the Secretary-Treasurer runs for Chair-Elect. The ACS National office offers a Leadership workshop during January to help Chair-Elect plan for the year as Chair. The third year, the Chair-Elect runs for Chair. The Councilor is a resource for the Executive Committee during three-year term and represents the local section at National Meetings.

Dr. Howard Peters and his wife Sally Peters, will be giving a presentation: “Chocolate: Food of the Gods”, on Wednesday, October 4th, at 7:00 p.m. Gonzaga University, Hughes Hall, Room 130. Chocolate samples will be provided during the presentation. This fun presentation includes: 1. Some high points of the ancient history of chocolate and its production from the Mayan, Olmec, and Aztec cultures up to the present; 2. Aspects of the processing, fermenting, drying, roasting, conching, tempering, blending, and finishing of the cocoa pod, bean and pulp; 3. A little chemistry, biochemistry, and biology of chocolate and its active ingredients including theobroma cocoa (literally from the Greek - Food of the Gods); 4. Health aspects (flavanoids, polyphenols, and other anti-oxidants) showing that this exotic processed food is good for you; 5. Some trivial connections about chocolate.
