Chemically breaking down gel packs

Blue Apron supplies 2 gel packs with every shipment.  That results in a lot of gel packs.  They say to throw them in the trash, but that doesn't seem to be the most environmentally friendly thing to do.  I've search the internet to see if I can find a better and nothing so far.

Is there a simple household chemical - like vinegar - that can be used to break down the gel into more friendly components?
