Environmental Life Cycle Assessment Hands-on Workshop

August 3-7, 2015, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina.

Environmental life cycle analysis (LCA) is currently a very important tool in industry and commerce. It is used to gauge a product orservice’s impact on the environment over the entire life cycle, from rawmaterials through to final fate. Companies are using LCA’s to communicateto the public, suppliers, and other businesses the impacts of their products. Environmental product performance declarations at various levels are nowpresent on a myriad of products.

The overall purpose of this course is for the students to be able to understand the fundamental principles of environmental LCA for a product or service and to develop the skills required to use accepted methodologies and commercial tools to complete an environmental LCA.

The course is hands-on. A combination oflectures, computer laboratory instructions, and student computerproblems/projects are used. Commercial LCA software will be provided to thestudents to keep and will be used extensively in the hands-on portion of thecourse. At the end of the course, the students will be able to conduct alife cycle assessment with commercial LCA software. The course will be a week-long and held on the NCSUcampus. Course instructors Dr. Richard Venditti (NCSU) and Dr. JesseDaystar (Duke University) have wide experience in teaching LCA courses andperforming LCA projects.
