Question about road salt for an article

I am writing an article about how road salt affects car and has to potential to corrode the undercarriage of a vehicle. I am looking for a brief explanation about:

What is road salt?

How does road salt interact with metals on a car and what does that result in?

What conditions make this interaction worse?

I am writing on a deadline so a prompt response would be greatly appreciated.

You can email me at or call me at 847-804-6508, whichever is easier and more convenient for you. If you do email me, please include your name, title at Northwestern and how long you have been working there.

Thank you for your help,

Re: Question about road salt for an article

Dear Ezra

Road salt is in most of the cases sodium chloride. Also calcium chloride is used to a lower extent. both are brought out either in solid form or in solution.

The corroding part is the chloride content.

hope that this answers at least a part of your questions.

Best regards
