Cr VI on Rusted Chrome Plating

Question asked by Chris Toles on Jan 1, 2019

Whenever I see a chrome-plated item (whether a truck hitch or a bathroom faucet) I am curious if any of the rust spots that one sometimes sees on these things contain any CrVI.

I understand that Cr is hard to oxidize so I assume that most of the rust I see is from underlying exposed Fe after the Chrome plating has been nicked or gouged.  But I was still curious if Cr VI can normally form on items like automotive parts or faucet fixtures.
