How create a temporary opaque surface atop still water ?

DETAILS:  I'm looking for a way to use a laser range finder {} to check the fill level of my underground cesspool, which has a vertical stack pipe for pump-outs.  Is there an inexpensive powder, oil or liquid I could pour a minute quantity of down the stack pipe to create a temporary opaque layer or film atop the liquid effluvium below, to enable laser targeting of the surface ? Preferrably something inexpensive, non-toxic and biodegradable.

Thanks in advance.
