FAQ questions (unedited) for the Working With Local Sections FAQ page
Some additional thoughts on some of the presented notes from the view point of a Local Section officer.
1 ) How can I find out what Local Section my Chapter is in and who do I contact?
The following link is reachable from the ACS Local Sections web page (www.acs.org/localsections) and will allow anyone to search for local sections by zip code and state:
Each Local Section has access to an online report of student members grouped by student chapter and the associated faculty advisor as well as chapter status.
2) How can I, as a Faculty Advisor be involved in my Local Section?
Our Local Section does have a line item to specifically provide support for our student member chapters. Those funds are distributed based on a proposal received a the student member chapter. For our Local Section in recent years we have supported paying for a limited number of first year student memberships. This to introduce newly involved students to the benefits of ACS membership. We have also provided matching funding for other student member chapter activities.
With regard to the last bullet, in entering Local Section activities into the FORMS system, there are a number of event “category(ies)” that we can select for each entered event. One of those is “Student Member”. In looking over the “Administration” section of the Local Section annual report I don’t see a question regarding student member chapters.
2) How can Chapter Officers / members be involved in my Local Section?
With regard to the bullet “Encourage other members to join the Local Section and officer to pay nominal local dues”, I’d like to clarify that an ACS Student Member would automatically be included in the roster of the associated Local Section. So there should not be a specific additional step for a ACS Student Member to join their associated Local Section. Local Sections also typically establish a specific dues amount for their members but those dues are collected on a voluntary basis. For regular ACS members that Local Section dues amount is included on their annual dues bill but its payment can be omitted without penalty. I’m not sure how that Local Section dues amount is handled for ACS Student Members but I’m not aware of any need to “offer to pay nominal local dues”.
4) What are some possible joint events between Chapters and Local Sections?
To this list I would suggest that addition of participation in ACS Regional Meetings. For each ACS Regional Meeting there are funds available to one Student Member Chapter to provide specific programming of interest to our Student Members. Besides being that primary Student Member Chapter other Student Member Chapters may partner with the them in accomplishing that goal.

Thank you for your additions! I'll make sure these end up on our resource list so our undergraduate chapter advisors have access to them. And this is exactly the kind of discussion we hoped this forum would generate, so if you have more, please don't hesitate to share.
